Rating: Four shoggoths out of five
Nutshell: A fragment of a tale about a man who cannot awake from a nightmare world. Commentary: This is an extremely interesting piece that is really worth reading. Sadly, this unfinished tale had promise, and could have ranked as one of Lovecraft's most interesting works. What is really kind of creepy is that Lovecraft writes this as himself: "My name is Howard Phillips. I live at 66 College Street..." The imagery is also especially potent. A historical note in my copy of this tale says that the body of this fragment was originally from a letter that Lovecraft sent to Donald Wandrei. The first and final paragraphs (regarding a character named Morgan) were added by J. Chapman Miske and were not part of Lovecraft's original intent. |
