Rating: Two shoggoths out of five
Nutshell: A protagonist narrates an opium-induced hallucination. Commentary: Although the initial premise is promising (seeking to describe the nature of hallucinations), this particular tale is more of a description of a dream than a narrative, and though pretty, winds up being fairly pointless. Lovecraft was clearly fascinated by the poetry of dreams, and loved to describe them (read "The Dream Quest of the Unknown Kadath" for a much better example), but this one is unfortunately just uninteresting. |
