Unfortunately, I don't have much to say about Supercon 2003. This is not the fault of the convention. The convention, in fact, was oodles of fun. I remember much drinking and revelry. However, it is now November 2004, and I'm trying to remember what the hell happened almost two years ago. I didn't take notes, and I took all of three photos. Thus, this convention report is going to be rather sparse.

Supercon happened for the tenth time on January 24 - 26, 2003. My "Cask Strength Fandom" cartoon, which I drew the previous year, graced the cover of the minimalist program. As is the habit for Supercon, the 60-some convention attendees spent the entire weekend relaxing, chatting, drinking, and playing games.

I wound up rooming with Christopher and our friends, Windy and Monte. This was quite the entertaining arrangement, as Windy and Monte are both theaterfolk. This meant daily shower serenades. I distinctly remember laying on the bed with Christopher as we listened to Windy and Monte sing a Kander and Ebb medley in the bathroom.

I also remember playing a lot of games that weekend. The hit game of the convention was a devilishly fun thing called Time's Up!, which Ryan Alexander had picked up at a gaming convention a few weeks before. Once it was discovered to be oodles of fun, the attendees were scrambling over each other to play more rounds. Since Time's Up! is a Charades hybrid, it even became something of a spectator sport.

There were several choice moments from these Time's Up! games. I won't attempt to fully explain them here, as they're probably best left in their non-sequiteur state:

  • Me pointing at Ryan's crotch and having someone correctly guess, "Peter O'Toole!"
  • Christopher fultilely trying to get me to say, "John Jacob Jingleheimerschmidt." No, I had never heard the song before.
  • Adam Kooyer drunkenly wandering off in the middle of a game. Another player watched him lumber away and noted, "Why do I feel like we're scientists, and we just unleashed Adam upon the world?" Christopher's response: "I'm telling you right now, this is all going to end on an ice floe."

By the end of the weekend, I had drawn up a cartoon in Crayolas, documenting that wonderfully weird exchange about Kooyer.

I also remember drinking and watching people play video games. But alas, I was too low-key that weekend to throw things off the interior balconies or, even, to take many photographs. I regret this greatly, as this was the last year that Supecon was hosted in the super-cool Best Western in Rochester, MN. Supercon has now moved to a much more boring hotel in Austin, MN, which does not offer prime vertical airspace between the fourth floor and the pool. Bummer.

So, really, that's about it. Thanks to my lovely roommates for splitting the hotel room with me, and to Adam Kooyer for scanning the charicature.
