Film Details:
Written and directed by Joe Ahearne ("Strange", "Trance") Starring Review: by Melissa (e-mail your faithful reviewer) This is the sort of filmmaking that sets people's mouths open in awe. I still can't believe something this clever, dense, dramatic, and well-written was made for TV. Leave it to the Brits to put something of genuine quality on television. "Ultraviolet" was a six-episode miniseries that ran on British television in 1998. It has gradually found a few niches of support in the U.S. (it has even run on the Sci-Fi Channel at least once), but it still wallows in obscurity over here... which is tragic. "Ultraviolet" is basically about a investigative unit bent on studying and controlling certain eerie goings-on. If I sound vague, it's on purpose. To say more would ruin the delicacy with which this series handles its subject. I'll just say that this thing makes "The X-Files" episodes look hollow, cheap, and blunt. And the subject matter... let's just say that this miniseries could never have aired in America. The topics that this series graces are generally poison in the U.S., and they are handled very frankly. The acting is spot-on, the script is potent and vital, the cinematography is perfect, and the direction owns a rare panache for swinging between the dramatic and the awesome. The episodes are absolutely magnetic. If/when you track this gem down at your local DVD shop, stake out a day when you can watch all six hours uninterrupted, because that is what you will do, whether you plan to or not. DVD Details: Dolby Digital Stereo There aren't any extras of note on this two DVD set, but the feature itself is everything you could ever want it to be. The sound is crisp, and the image is perfect.
