Film Details:
Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break, Strange Days, Blue Steel) Written by Starring Anchor Bay Home Entertainment Okay, so it's been awhile since I've posted anything, but I've been busy. I work retail and this is Christmas. I'm in hell. That being said, my life is still easier than that of the main character in this film. I mean, you meet a girl, and she bites you. Pretty standard stuff. But then it turns out you're now a vampire and you have to meet her dysfunctional vampire family. You have to listen to Bill Paxton as he goes on and on about how bad ass he is. Tiring. This film did not get the kind of attention it deserved. It came out around the same time as The Lost Boys, and was totally overshadowed by it. It was one of those situations. Tombstone/Wyatt Earp, Armageddon/Deep Impact, Volcano/Dante's Peak. Not that most of these films are any good, I'm just using them as examples of how this kind of weirdness happens in Hollywood every so often. The story is pretty good and the fact that the word vampire is never uttered a single time through the entire film is awesome. Not once is it used. That's damn impressive. The whole film, with only small exceptions, is shot entirely at night, early morning, or late evening. It's a very effective film and extremely well lit. I know most people don't give a shit about lighting, but remember the above mentioned shooting conditions. The acting is mostly good with Lance Henriksen and Tim Thomerson really giving it their all and Bill Paxton chewing up the scenery, as is his God given right. The wonderful and beautiful Kathryn Bigelow did an excellent job with this film and now that I realize she directed K-19 Widowmaker, I have a larger desire to see it, even if Harrison Ford does a worse Russian accent than Sean Connery. In closing I would just like to point out that one of Kathryn's other films, Point Break, has recently been remade under the title The Fast and the Furious. Of course, nobody but me seems to realize this. DVD Details: The Packaging on this DVD is pretty cool in and of itself. The holofoil cover is nice and the various poster reproductions on the insert are cool. Disc One Disc Two Further Information: |
