New Line

Review: by Don (e-mail your faithful reviewer)

Crazy movie. Just crazy. We waited years for this film. Ten years of actual waiting, and even more hypothetical waiting. I probably don’t have to tell you the history of this film, but we've been waiting with bated breath since New Line bought the rights to the Freddy franchise from Paramount. When New Line made the absolutely shitty Jason Goes to Hell, it was depressing. But the end….oh the end. It set all of us little fan boys aquiver.

So we waited. They made some more Freddy films. Then we waited. Things got awkward. Jason X got made. We all saw it and then New Line finally got its collective ass in gear and the long awaited became the shortly awaited. Then it became the quickly anticipated. Finally it became my ass glued in the seat as I watched. The wait was finally over.

And it was good. Dammit I really wanted it to be SPECTACULAR, but it was good. It had the gratuitous nudity. It had the senseless violence. It had Freddy versus Jason. It had everything it needed to be exactly what it was supposed to be. I don’t know what else to say. Freddy fought Jason and somebody won.

Who won?

Fuck you, go watch the movie.

Allow me to pick some nits, however. Since when has Jason ever been THAT afraid of water? I mean don’t get me wrong. You give Freddy a fire complex and Jason a water complex and it sort of makes sense seeing as how that's how each of them died, but really. Jason can't stroll through a thin wall of water? You see him on multiple occasions just strolling through the stuff, thigh deep in it in THIS movie. What’s up with that? The only theory that I can come up with is that he is only truly afraid of the water in the Dream world, where things take on a greater significance.

There was a lot about this movie that I liked.  The way the kids decided to use Jason as a weapon against Freddy was interesting, especially since that was the reason Freddy brought Jason to kill the kids anyway. The fights between the two of them were almost hysterical, watching Freddy move with speed and grace using some sort of demon kung fu while Jason just stands there and takes the hit. Jason is the Unstoppable force and Immovable object all rolled up into one hideously disfigured body. The fights were a bit like this:

Freddy –
Punch, Punch, Punch, Punch, Punch, Kick, Kick, Punch.

Jason –
KAWHAM!

Freddy –
AHHHHhhhh……thud.

Good stuff that.

On an actor note, Kane Hodder should have been in this movie.

Jason Ritter was good enough to do his daddy proud.

Kelly Rowland is no Beyonce Knowles. She wishes she were, but she isn’t.

Katharine Isabelle is fabulous. See Ginger Snaps if you haven’t already. NOW.
