This flick is the epitome of great cheesy 1950's drive-in creature feature horror. Really, interest in it today is more based on it being a piece of American pop history rather than on the quality of the film itself.

It's certainly not a great film. The acting is cheesy, the directing is merely adequate, and the dialogue is often laughable. The special effects are kind of fun -- though often through being really bad.

However, the teen characters are often more respectable than their adult counterparts, and they are allowed to act with intelligence. The other characters, no matter how small, are almost always humanized in some way. These assets, plus the surprise addition of a very young Steve McQueen, make this film a rough little gem.

The plot, basically, involves a creeping ooze from outer space that eats people. (Creature features just don't get any better than that!) A couple of teens try to save their town from the gelatinous alien, much to the chagrin of the non-believing adults around them.

It's not very frightening these days, but I remember being terrified of The Blob when I was a kid, so that must count for something. It's great fun to watch, especially if you can track down the DVD.

DVD Details:

Anamorphic Widescreen
Dolby 2.0 Mono
Commentary with the producer, director, and Robert Fields
Commentary with film historian Bruce Eder
Memorabilia and other odds and ends

All the above stuff is fun, but I imagine any DVD could be made stellar by adding Burt Bacharach's hit song, "Beware the Blob", as the soundtrack for the menu structure. Yeah!
